Shantae Project - Harpy WIPs - Project update (important) (Patreon)

So, I've done most of the animation now for both harpy versions. You can view them at the following Gfycat links (again I don't have an easy way to preview video)

I'm at a bit of an impasse on this project. I've been at it for a year now, and it's been eating at me to the point where I don't want to work on it anymore.

It's also creating the other problem of I feel intense guilt if I try to work on something else. These two thoughts wind up fighting with each other until I do nothing, or at least far less than what I'd want to.

I'm also getting more and more paranoid over parodies, given some stuff friends of mine have had to deal with.

This project is immense. And what's worse it's immense in a way that doesn't really show it. I cannot stress how tedious the process of making transitions for these animations are. I can't even stress how tedious the process of making fully animated bits like these two is. Additionally, this isn't one or two scenes, it's eight. As a result there's a LOT of content, but it's somewhat shallow.

It's far easier to just make a collection of loops or one-off animations.

Doing so is a farcry from what I wanted to create but at this point I think it'd be better to just have it out there and done so I can focus on other things.

Aside from this I want to start the next animation for PV02, and make a sequel to Hiro the Dense. PV02 in particular has a lot more of a priority because it's time sensitive, based on when I release updates. (Also having Hiro the Dense 2 out for the holidays would be a huge boost for me on youtube, if that's possible to hit.) But it feels like mental sandpaper to work on these things when the Shantae project's incomplete. (Hell I had the same problem with the Bowsette/Booette gifs I made.)

So, for anyone who has suggestions or ideas (or even complaints), please share your thoughts on what you'd realistically rather see done with the project at this point. I understand a lot of people have been waiting for this project but for the sake of my mental health I cannot deliver on my original vision. This isn't something I want but I need to be realistic.

Some ideas:

  • Just make all the scenes a series of looping gifs, rather than video. Add a few additional loops / animations for existing scenes. Drop the story elements / limit them to text descriptions.
  • Shelve the project and revisit it at a later date (I've done this once already with this project if anyone recalls)
  • Publish what's been done as-is.

Personally, I wouldn't mind the first option (just make them looping gifs). I wasn't here to see the first time you've put this off, so some people might feel more strongly or differently, but your mental health definitely takes priority. If and when you feel like you can handle it, *then* maybe you can refine your looping gifs by adding the story elements into them at a later date. I feel this is a good middle ground between finishing this project and your mental health. You can always continue refining/add the story elements later.

I also don't really mind when or how long you take to finish the project, with so much going on understandably you'd also have a priority list, and that's completely fine. We don't want our favourite artists and creators beating themselves up or overworking themselves :D

I'd say shelve it if it's this rough on you to keep putting work into it, or publish what you have already. The work you've done so far looks great, but no project is worth your mental health.

What ever you are comfortable with doing is fine with me. If you are looking for an easy way to make this feel more of complete then why not make the beginning, transactions, and ending as conversations ‘animations’ like they do in the game? That way the real meat of the work is making stills of Rotty Tops and Shanata as well as written dialogue, while the actual animations are the loops. I hope the idea helps and if it doesn’t please know I don’t hold any expectations for it and would much prefer any option that leaves you happy in the end! ^^

I think it’s best if you just shelf it for now. You may want to work on it at a later date.

I've seen this before, and I can only hope I speak for the majority of people when I say "It's okay"! Not only has this project taken a year to get this far in, but you also have so much to do as well with time-sensitive projects and constantly updating the comic. I recommend a mix of shelving it and simplifying it with more loops. Make the project easier and take a break from it. We can wait!

Looping gifs is what I would like, but if its really eating at you just release what you have now.

I'd say if it's bothering you that much, and the comments being okay with whatever, I'd suggest just dumping what you have and work on what's most important to you.
