Patreon's changing stuff again (Patreon)
Content
So, since it's been available as an option, I've always billed people on the day they pledge, and then that pledge recurs on the first of each month after that. This keeps things simple for me (I have a predictable ebb and flow of income) and hopefully for y'all as well (getting charged on the first of the month seems easier to remember than whatever random day you happened to sign up).
Well, Patreon, in order to keep their app on the Apple/iOS store, is changing how that works. Everyone must use the "recurring charges happen on the random day you signed up" model. In addition to that, they're going to start charging an extra 30% on all subscriptions purchased through the iOS app. So, here's my advice to you -- you can still use the iOS app to browse Patreon, but please make your subscription purchases through the Patreon website so you don't pay extra for nothing (basically a donation to Apple for the honor of using their storefront).
Nothing else is changing (or so they say), and apparently Patrons who're already set up for first-of-the-month billing will still be billed like normal -- it's just new ones that get the new system.
I, like you, really love all the dopey changes Patreon has made over the past few years (heavy sarcasm intended), but this is still the best place I've found to share my work in a way that allows people to support me. I've got a SubscribeStar set up just in case things go really sour here, but I'll be here for as long as I possibly can. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you all so much for being here and helping me make a living doing what I love.
