Those of you that have played the beta test version of Episode 2, would have seen the lovely new backgrounds. I thought I'd take a short break from writing the new Mah'Abeu content to share some design insights with you!

The above image was the first rough sketch that caba111 did of the bridge. As you can see there are some large windows staring into space. If you recall from this post we did a few months back, you don't need (or want) windows on your bridge or CiC.

So caba111 continued working on the concept, replacing the windows with screens and info panels. You'll also notice that the lines are somewhat more defined, all part of the process.

Once we had the rough feeling locked down, caba111 made sure that the perspectives were working. Being a Visual Novel, we have "some" freedom when it comes to perspective, thanks to the theater of the mind.

Lastly, we added a railing to give an "upper" level to the bridge where Lochem and Raymond can be seen conversing. This was one of the final sketches before we started coloring.

Creating backgrounds can be time consuming and therefore expensive. This whole process took approximately 20 days from first sketch to final colored version. Granted, caba111 has other responsibilities and doesn't draw full time, but it is still a lengthy process.

I hope you enjoyed the insight! Let me know if you would like to see more of these, and if so - should we do the medsec or corridor next?

Really cool to see how these assets came together! Love the insight and love what you are doing!

... aaand I just realized I misspelled "backgrounds" in the image header! :| Whoops. It'll be fixed in future images. Let this forever stay up and become a monument to remind me to not finalize designs in the wee hours of the morning without proof reading them.

It's really cool to see the iteration of this!
