Iirc Mashima stated in the final volume that he already planned Alvares arc to be the final arc during the early of this arc (even his team and editors also surprised with this decision) so he could start a new project. But on the bright side, at least he managed to give a proper ending of his own accord, not because of health issues like Bleach or the different visions between the author and readers like Shaman King. Speaking of bad filler episodes, ep 69-72 are the only bad fillers episode that kinda not worth watching, there's a little moment between Gray and Juvia in this mini-arc though.
