This is 1 of the points where Luffy's motives are uncertain. Did he face Aokiji alone knowing that would keep his crew safe? or like the Admiral suggests, Luffy actually thought he could win? (FYI Luffy could NEVER have won against Aokiji. Just like Zoros battle against Hawkeye, it was entirely one sided.)
