Part 1: About the box set – if you mean the collector’s edition – be prepared for each book to be about as heavy as your laptop, probably more so even, based on how it looks like xD Because they didn’t put 20 novels into one box – they redesigned it into 2 heavy volumes 10-novels-long each. It is absolutely something I would recommend. I have one and it’s gorgeous. But it will not be something that would make it easier to follow, for you to show us, for a couple of reasons: first, it would be very heavy for you to lift, second – it has a different format than the paperbacks or digital versions, so the pages will not match at all, and third – for same reason, the size of the text will be even smaller than in regular edition, hard to show on a camera. But since I’m writing it after finishing all 4 videos, I can tell you, that following as it is now isn’t really hard as long as you have a copy of audiobook. Symbolically, this arc starts right about the time as the first novel of the Aincrad – probably only a week or two earlier, given it’s a month before the end of the game, and the first book covered about a couple of weeks before the end. And this moment reminds me of one of the last lines of Kirito in Aincrad, «I lost count, but I probably turned sixteen last month». Because by the end of the game, he was so distant from Kazuto, that Kazuto’s birthday and age were of no importance already. Yet, this novel, with Suguha’s point of view, opposes it right away, shifts the beginning to this date. It brings us as readers closer to that reality. And I’ll say it again and again, but I love how Reki carefully sets up parallels. He doesn’t overuse them – you don’t really see them unless you go through the story again while searching for that layer. Yet he managed to put a very similar line in the very beginning of V1 and 3. Kirito, V1, first page – «Okay, it wasn’t quite that simple». Suguha, V3, first page – «But no, that wasn’t quite right». Of course, it might be an accident (as some small author managed to reply to the things, I found in his stories xD), but for me – it creates an extra feeling of bond between Kazuto and Suguha, the way they thinking aligns in such moments. Member of the Ministry sounds exactly like someone we know from anime :) Part 2: As I was collecting my thoughts for this part, I somehow ended up buying the new Twilight audiobook. Somehow, it feels fitting – now that I’ve seen the Progressive movie, that switched the perspective from Kirito to Asuna to tell the story in the timeline we already seen – to move into the story that switches the perspective from Bella to Edward in the timeline already seen, as well. And now I realize – with Fairy Dance being technically a sequel to Aincrad, it actually reminds me the beginning of the sequel to the Twilight. That passing of time in separation of protagonists, the haunting nightmares, the attempts to be normal in front of others while not being truly alive until they find each other again? These stories resonated pretty well with each other in my mind. Ironic, that mentioning either of these series in the open conversation usually produces weird reactions from people, to say the least. «I’m such a crybaby now» – given how Kirito wasn’t able to cry all throughout the Aincrad, up until Asuna brought Kazuto back in his mind – makes this part so heavy. It brings me back to the end of the first volume «The emotions that had been frozen in the endless twilight churned into motion» and I can’t help but see the Twilight resonating again – she finally made his frozen heart to beat, only to be separated into half-life again by the sequel. … while I was preparing the comment, met a discussion where *both* Bella and Kirito were framed as Mary Sues (when Bella was called one, Kirito’s «example» soon followed lol). I start to see a trend there – socially awkward teenagers of good nature, no matter the suffering they go through, or help of friends and loved ones, I guess would easily be misunderstood, both in real life and in fiction.
