Careful switching to a metal one. They are often plastic for a reason. Its not so it will wear off over time and they force you to buy a new one. On these kinds of gear systems theres no roll pin or failure point. It was plastic because that is the wear/failure should the slide get stuck or bind. Bad Design? Maybe but it was plastic for a good reason.. I have rack & pinion slideouts on my 40ft DP using a lippert motor and there is a roll pin there as the designed failure point should the slide bind or get stuck... so it doesnt wreck the gear or motor system.
