OPIE OFF LEASH! YIKES!

I'm Afraid of hawks, owls, coyotes, cars... I don't like taking chances. I would be devastated if something happened. Especially if they run off and can't catch them. Last couple nights my Chester snuck out somehow (I think he pushed out on one of the windows) and was out for hours. Luckily he stuck around here. Tigger was goin nuts and alerted me something was wrong. Ugh🥴🥺 usually if they get out they don't go far, but man.. It's that one time they don't .. or someone picks them up or they get hit or attacked.. 😱I have lost a cat that way. It sucks.

Well, let’s score Eric, as well… Hmmm, seems how much Opie enjoyed exploring and how he got going faster and faster, I’d say Eric scored a 2. He had good intensions, but there are so many reasons to retain a leash. 1. He can take off in a flash and you don’t have the ability to catch up and gain control. 2. The hawks/predators mentioned are a very real danger. You’re not in civilization now. 3. Opie will get bolder and bolder about trying t go out and have his freedom. And he can move way faster than you to accomplish his goal. In a blink…he’ll slip through the door. And not just at home base—on the road as well. (Goose does it with me all the time—and I’m hyper-vigilant. Cats are just too fast. So it’s a HARD NO on outside without a leash for me! Sorry, Eric. NO!

He’s young and it’s good exercise. I know precaution is very important but it’s good that you teach him to stay close. He can learn that. I live in the Arizona desert and would never do this at night or not “right there” just as you did. HOWEVER!! we have coyotes and quail, both are fast!! The coyote will chase your cat… your cat will chase the quail! I bought a Great Dane cage and it’s strong, big, and safe for my cats. Lined it with outdoor carpet (which you have to pick up and clean every once in a while, because of the snakes and spiders… You don’t want them to nest!!)

No matter how you try he has a mind of his own and he will start sneaking out when you're not looking or learn how to open the slider and sneak out it's just better to keep him on a leash especially where you're at not just the coyotes but the Hawks and so many things out there that are poisonous or that can hurt him just give him a longer leash one that you can pull in if you need to I'm only talking by experience Eric hopefully you'll never experience it
