Bulwark Blades

Shield, uncommon (requires attunement)

Component: Construct stone

The bulwark blades, signature weapons of the Last Legion, demonstrate their unusual protective philosophy. Even as these swords whirl in devastating patterns, they still maintain a steady defence. The shield often fells more enemies than the blades.

Defender’s Blades. While this item is in its shield form, you can use a bonus action to perform a defensive split, transforming it into two magical shortswords. When you do, your speed increases by 10 feet and you gain a +1 bonus to your AC until the start of your next turn.

Attacker’s Aegis. While this item is in the form of two shortswords, you can use a bonus action to perform a unifying sweep attack, transforming it back into a shield which you immediately don. When you do, each creature of your choice within 5 feet of you must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 1d4 slashing damage and is pushed 5 feet directly away from you.

Very rare variant: While this item is in the form of two shortswords, you gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with these magic weapons. While this item is in the form of a shield, you have a +2 bonus to AC.

Having the transformations be coupled with the abilities is awesome!!!

Question, does the very rare variant stack with the shield initial +2, making the shield give you a +4 to ac?

Question I see the two shortsword ability is a bonus action and ends at the start of your next turn. But the follow up ability uses your bonus action which you'll never get a chance to use as you only have the 1 bonus action to activate it? Is this a typo? Should it be an action to activate then bonus action to do the chain ability?

The item remains transformed until you use a bonus action to transform it back. The speed and AC only last until the end of the turn, but it remains as 2 short swords. Thus you can transform back and forth each turn or leave it in one form for longer. The idea is that you gain the most out of the item by constantly switching. For example, you might transform the shield into swords and make two attacks and gain that bonus. Next turn, you could make 2 attacks and then transform the swords into a shield to gain the shield's AC bonus until the following turn. Repeat!
