Flesh Symbiont, heart

Wondrous item, rare

Compendium Edit: This symbiont is an abominable side product of a crazed necromancer’s arcane experimentation. Brimming with eyes and teeth, this symbiont vaguely resembles a humanoid heart.

As an action you can press this heart to the chest of a humanoid within reach. An unwilling creature must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or have the heart burrow into its chest, consuming any existing heart. Provided the creature has been dead for no longer than 10 days and still has its head attached to its body, it grows to resemble the original heart over the course of 24 hours, restoring 1 hit point and bringing the creature back to life upon completion. If the creature's soul is trapped, the effect fails and the heart is expelled.

Curse. The symbiont’s dark nature and fear of light causes you to gain resistance to necrotic damage and the sunlight sensitivity trait (see below). You gain the symbiotic vigor trait (see below). Casting remove curse on the heart causes the heart to rot, killing its host, and removing the vulnerability, resistance, and traits conferred by the curse. Surgically removing the heart renders the host unconscious until it finishes a long rest, at which point the heart magically grows back.

Sunlight sensitivity. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.

Symbiont vigor. This property of the heart only works while you are not in direct sunlight. The heart has 6 charges and regains 1d6 charges when you finish a long rest. These charges manifest as 6 lidless eyes appearing on random locations across your body. While the heart is inside you, you can, as a reaction to taking damage, expend one charge to cast the false life spell, gaining the temporary hit points immediately before you take the triggering damage. Constitution is your spellcasting ability modifier. Whenever you do so, one of the eyes closes.
