yoooo i own one of those hitachi mp3's it was my first media player, costed 40 quid back in 2008. honestly still use it occasionally, pretty robust little buggers, had shrek and alvin an the chipmunks on that bastard too

if the file name is being messed up by the mac its usually just a jumble of letters and/ or numbers so it tends to be obvious when it happens. the dates thing you're likely correct on
