Wow, that player was garbage. When I saw the file system error, I assumed it would reformat itself, but I think it just wiped its own firmware (because it listed you can update the firmware on the device in the manual). RIP.

That is impressive. Most flash memory has a data retention of 10 years. This can't possibly be that old. I've got devices with flash memory from over 10 years ago that still work fine.

My first mp3 player was a Memorex, I think I bought it in 2003, I knew nothing about mp3 players at the time. I paid a fortune for that player, I hadn't heard of the iPod yet, but I think it was out. As I remember the Memorex cost almost as much as an iPod. My player did all the things this one did in the video. It was garbage. It would take hours to get songs on the thing. Mind did have a built in battery but it was terrible. After a few months of Memorex misery, I threw it out and got an iPod. Just seeing this video is giving me flashbacks!

My first Walkman was a bright red Memorex. Came with rechargeable batteries, which took about 13 hours to charge and gave about 1hr playback. Ditched them for alkalines when I realised they’d last days instead. The packaging on this nugget made me think of feminine hygiene products...that was before I saw the skull though. Also, obligatory eggs.
