I feel like something like this was inevitable ever since it was decided that the Oscars should be a roast-fest instead of just doing bits about the movies or good-natured humor that doesn't touch people's appearances. Out of all the jokes that could have been made, the one that was was very tame, which makes me hope that the awards and their hosts/presenters can do better in the future. Many comedians are excellent at making jokes that don't (or rarely) go into appearance-based territory. Gaffigan, Oswalt, Mulaney -- all super funny people who, if they're joking about the way someone looks, are usually being self-deprecating. I think there's a clear higher ground here and making fun of people's personal struggles and appearances isn't it. Jokes don't have to be personal to be funny. Hopefully shows like this can do better in the future and lead with grace and kindness.
