I prettied up for the White Elephant Burlesque Silver Tusk Awards. I didn't win anything but I didn't expect to. When you're up against Femme Appeal for "weirdest performer" you know you're not going to win.

But! I got some writing done on my screenplay. I even managed to get in some dialogue. For the most part, the harder emotional scenes seem to be easier to write than other stuff. But I got sidetracked when trying to about my middle school class mates confronting me about my dad being trans.

I didn't think it could just be a bunch of popular kids walking up and saying "I heard your Dad is a transsexual." So I tried to remember what actually happened. I remembered there was a small preamble but couldn't remember what it was. It came back to me slowly. A guy had asked me something weird. That's how it started. It was weird and confusing and I had the sense that it was vaguely political. Finally I remembered he'd asked me about my jacket. He asked if I knew that my jacket was the same colors as the IRA flag.

WHY WOULD HE ASK ME THAT?!?!?!

This memory was so utterly weird that it completely derailed my thinking and I had to stop writing for the day. It had to either have been a completely random association or a REALLY obscure Crying Game reference. Probably the former.

Either way, not a useful memory. And I'll have to make something up.

It’s also particularly weird given that the IRA flag has the same colors as the Irish flag. So weird.

I have some memories of that time too that I'm happy to share if it would be helpful for your writing process.
