I wish we had gotten a full season with this version of Connor. This episode really showed off Vincent Kartheiser's acting range and how he can portray the same character in a completely different way than before.

I love this episode so much. It was so important to bring Connor back and show him in a new light. We’ve always known he was a tragic and sympathetic character who was a victim of his upbringing and circumstance. But it’s always been hard to remember that when he was being impossible to reason with in seasons 3 and 4. But now we really see how capable he was of being a good person with a bright future. Angel’s pain is really palpable in this episode though :( At least in the end he has some sort of peace that he did the right thing. And in these episodes there’s still a constant dark cloud of Fred being gone and her “shell” still haunting everyone in the form of Illyria, but it’s so bittersweet because Illyria is truly fascinating and a strong addition to the show. So I’ve always had an internal conflict about that. And ever since her introduction in A Hole in the World, it’s pretty much all 10/10 episodes all the way to the series finale. I’m forever bummed we didn’t get a sixth season because there’s a lot of great setup for potential future storylines.

Excellent analysis. It's somewhat bittersweet that Angel is seeing the person his son could (and should) have always been. Angel is proud of how his son's life has turned out, but there's also the pain of Angel knowing he can't be a part of that life.
