The title of the episode: "the lies will catch up to you" was from season 1 episode 5 when Stefan locked damon up after he spiked Caroline's drink with vervain to stop damon.

Kai is amazing and is the main reason I watched these episodes even though I had stopped watching TVD after season 6. Loved all the comedy with him and Damon, and him being like "lol jk I actually like being bad" at the end. I also have to say, rewatching this episode now, I get the same ishy feeling I did the first time about a bunch of pretty white people with superpowers who prance around above the rest of the world compelling/rationalizing to black people who have experienced atrocities. Particularly in the case of Matt recruiting Caroline to compel people, it is law enforcement gaslighting victims to protect their own friends. I understand the context of the show (vampires, it isn't Stefan's "fault" that he loses his humanity, Caroline genuinely trying to make that man's life better etc.) makes it different in some ways than the reality of those problems, but it just kind of reinforces that TVD universe has always been tonally brain dead about these issues. I don't even need to mention Bonnie in that regard.

Honestly stopping the watch after season 6 really made you miss most of the character developments :/ at that rate they did way better then the beginning seasons. Also yes it has been tone deaf in a sense, but if you watch shows these days that are fully trying to encompass real life issues etc, the shows truly suck because people just try to be inclusive in every aspect and lose the actual passion of writing without worries. I get making sure to cover some topics or at least be somewhat aware, but in the end now people are SO worried about writing fake tv shows around these issues that all the content these days is crap honestly. We know what the real world is like, it’s not needed to outline every single humanity issue in shows too. Although tvd did cover and mention some, which they could do with a show being able to murder, have victims, it opens those doors a bit more, but they didn’t overtly focus on it all which is what made a show a show, escapable from the real world yet intertwine with it.
