I kind of remembered to save some process images of a nice long background panel (though I clearly forgot between steps 3 and 4, which is a bit of a "draw the rest of the owl", sorry!)

Huh. Do you usually have the character art and poses done before you start on the background, or was that just for illustrative purposes?

No always but usually, yes! If I'm drawing a scene where characters will be interacting with the background (eg. sitting at a table) I'll do a detailed sketch of the background first (or, more commonly, place the 3D model first) so I can draw the characters properly. But even then I tend to flat the foreground before I colour the background, partially because it fits with my workflow better, and partially so I can make the BG colours fit the character colours. The only time I'll colour the BG first is if I'm starting a brand new scene, with brand new outfits. In this case I'll do at least one large bg first (to determine the colour scheme for the whole scene) then figure out the outfit colours, then flat the foreground, then do the rest of the backgrounds.
