July step-by-step (Patreon)

A while back I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to do a Steven Universe cover (!!!!), and it's coming out (issue 30!!!) so here's the behind the scenes.

I was asked to do something in my style, with at least one human, and send a couple of possible thumbnails.

(Guess who my favourite human is?)

I was asked to do the Steven Connie falling one, but zoomed out so we see their full bodies (which I personally thinks makes for a much less interesting composition? but not my call)

I'm not sure I have any commentary for the individual steps, this is pretty much my normal drawing/colouring process.

Along the way I was asked to remove the eye highlights, and Steven's stray hair strands, to keep it closer to the Steven Universe style. I was also asked to round out the clouds, for the same reason.

And then I was asked to make the clouds even more Steven Universe style,  so I ended up completely changing the shape of the cloud formation, because I didn't think the shape of the clouds in the original thumbnail worked well with the SU style.
