About a month ago, I was approached by the creator of Map Chart, a website that allows you to create your own map by color coding regions. It's a really cool application that includes all sorts of modern and historical maps for you to modify, and is now branching into fantasy maps. 

Together, we assembled a Tamrielic regions map for you guys to make your own.

The main continent, province shapes, and cities come from the Anthology map. As such, it represents Tamriel at the end of the 3rd era. Since there is no official map of region breakdowns, I extrapolated them from political and geological areas in the games. Here's how it breaks down: 

  • Blue = based on ingame divisions
  • Red = made up by me. 

Cyrodiil: Although we have the names of the counties, we don't know where their borders lie. I approximated them as best I could, and added some geological areas to keep the sizes consistent. 

Vvardenfell: Based on the landscape divisions in TES3.

Mainland Morrowind: Based on ESO where available, though skewed to match the Anthology map borders. 

Black Marsh: I outlined Shadowfen and Murkmire from ESO, and guessed at the rest based on the major cities in the province. 

Elsweyr: The Reaper's March section in the east is from ESO, while the rest is based on an  alpha map. At first, I divided this into just Reaper's March, Norther, and Southern Elsweyr, but that made this province have far fewer subdivisions than the rest. 

Valenwood: ESO. 

Summerset: There was no info on this one, so I filled it in based on major cities. 

High Rock: ESO.

Hammerfell: ESO, with the rest filled in based on remaining cities. 

Skyrim: Shows the nine Holds, based on the map in TES5

Honestly I am not so sure about some of thees, mostly because they don't make sense from the perspective of making maps using this tool. While technically Balmora being in West Gash may be true, from region break down I think it would be more useful to have region around Balmora be separate, perhaps Souther West Gash? Also, Red Mountain being a region would make sense. Also I think it would be more useful if Northern Deshan was separated in two to make separate area for the region around Mournhold, after all now you can't really make a map that shows posessions of the five great houses. I haven't played Oblivion in the long time but pretty sure area of Great Forest stretched a bit closer to Chorol while also didn't stretching to the southern shore of lake Rumare, perhaps it should either go to Heartlands, Bravil, be independent or even Nibenay basin. I don't remember Blackwood being this north and in fact I am pretty sure it was way to the south on the other side of Nibenay from Leyawiin; either way I think having the right shore of Nibenay seprate from the shore where Leyawiin itself is located would be more useful. I didn't play Daggerfall or ESO but is there really no way to make more than one region in Glenumbra? It is really big and stretched and I think it would be useful for High Rock, known for its periodic decentralization, to have higher flexibility in choosable region count. Either way, this is still very useful and fun, thanks for taking your time setting this up alongside with mapchart.

Hey there, thanks for the feedback! You hit on one of the big first questions that MapChart and I had to answer -- do we go with regions based on lore, or regions based on what would be most useful for mapping? I ended up choosing the former because it was the most clear cut and least ambiguous. For most of Tamriel, we have clearly defined regional outlines of one sort or another, but I really have no idea what sorts of maps people want to make with the tool (so what is useful for one may hamper another). The one thing I do want to revisit is generally splitting the bigger regions into 2-3 smaller regions (Glenumbra, in your example). ESO's base zones all did this, and it would provide more granular mapping. However, since most of Tamriel did not have those divisions, I did not want to guess and make that version the initial release.
