Designing Saint Jiub (Patreon)
Content
The chief inspiration was Christian iconography of St. George slaying the dragon, which I figured was a fitting way to depict a saint canonized solely for his eradication of cliff racers.
The result of my first attempt was the image shown in this post. While it had the same sort of cut away geometric style as Morrowind's shrine, it turned out more realistic and figurative than they are, and ultimately fit better with the depictions of saints like Seryn or Aralor than the really stylized Nerevar and Llothis.
I started with a rough sketch. I then turned down the opacity on it and started working with the polygonal lasso tool to carve out the geometric shapes. After some helpful critique halfway through I reworked the legs and attempted to make the whole thing more stylized.
While the design didn't end up working for my bookmarks, I do think it looks cool. Here's a take of it as a fresco.
For the second iteration, I wanted to make sure to keep it bolder and less figurative. I started with a really rough marker drawing, then painting over a picture of it in Adobe Sketchbook, and finally pulling that sketch into Photoshop and doing a similar approach as above. I made sure to keep my other two saints on screen at the same time so that I could keep the style in mind.
Here's an image of how I get the drawings onto lino:
