Yet another Zelda piece I've covered in the past has been given the revision treatment! This time around this song is clearly inspired by the A Link Between Worlds version - opting for a folksy ensemble playing the theme in the beginning and eventually transitioning into something more orchestral and bombastic.

@0:00 - In both of my versions of this piece I've opted to repeat the first four bars. I think it gives the music more time to build, and in this case since the track is so iconic, it generates some anticipation for a very recognizable theme.

@0:14 - The first loop features the "A Link Between Worlds" ensemble. Scratchy Violin, Hand Drums, Dulcimer, Double-Tracked Mandolin and Upright Bass help make this track's setting feel more unique when contrasted with Hyrule Field's typical orchestral jauntiness.

@0:24 - Having a sparser ensemble here allows for some more detailed Woodwind writing. Write for Woodwinds!!!

@0:52 - I've always found this section really interesting! The chromatically descending bassline allows for some really interesting chord colors. I've chosen to add the 7th to each of these chords to make it feel even more otherworldly (And to maybe lean into the folky-ness of this loop).

Also, just with the nature of the chords here, I've added in a few subtle Zelda's Lullaby motifs into the harmony.

@1:14 - We immediately move on the next loop, which is far more heroic and bombastic. The Mandolin and Upright Bass are maintained to keep the driving rhythm going.

@1:52 - This is such a fun section, because by tweaking the instrumentation you can transform a previously mysterious part into something with a lot of action to it. I think tone versatility is an important part of writing good melodies. (And Koji Kondo is quite skilled at that!)

@2:06 - As the new loop begins it's perfect time to throw in Link's Theme, to further increase the drama.

@2:13 - This loop remains mostly the same, but this time some staccato string rhythms are outlining the chords. One of my favorite orchestration techniques to increase tension/emotion is the lovingly named "a ton of fast shit happens while the melody slowly plays overhead." It almost simulates the feeling of getting chills.

@3:06 - This all leads to the end. I forced the harmony to push us into A minor with a few augmented chords, and it lands us into the beloved Dark World fanfare from A Link Between Worlds. Something as dramatic as a fanfare is always a good note to begin or end on.

And that about does it! Nothing too wild going on here, but it's always a tough personal challenge to respectfully portray a very popular piece. I hope it hold up!

As always, if there are any questions about the piece feel free to leave them in the comments!
