If you don't want to hear the gory details about my job, you can stop reading here. :P It's kind of boring but I want to explain it in it's entirety for anyone interested just to point out how bullshit it was.
Okay sooo... I was a sever at Texas Roadhouse, and I can say without a doubt I am damn good at being a server and I had excellent work ethic. This is a long story so I'm going to try to abridge it... Yesterday I was in a section completely isolated from everyone elses sections. I was literally all the way in the back of the restaurant away from the other people's sections (it was lunch, so they only have 9 servers on instead of the usual 23). It is also policy (or was, apparently) at my store that if you have one table left after you are cut, that you can leave them with another server as long as the table has paid, this is to save on labor costs. Corporate doesn't want a single server staying there wasting hourly wages while a table who has already paid is sitting there for however many hours. SO yesterday I had my lonesome section, and I was cut. I had one table of the nicest elderly ladies EVER left finishing eating. I am patient, so I let them finish eating, and I went over to drop off their check. These ladies LOVED me, they tipped me $17 on a small $20 check because they thought I was the most patient server ever, lol. They were observant though, because they asked me, "Hey! We noticed we are the last people here in this entire area. Are we your last table? We don't want to keep you, but we want to sit here and talk for a few more hours!" And I said without even hesitating because it was POLICY, "Don't worry about it! You ladies are all checked out with me. I'll refill your drinks, and I'm allowed to leave I'll just have one of my fellow servers keep an eyeball on you ladies to make sure you aren't causing any trouble over here! Are you sure you ladies don't need anything else before I leave?" And they were like "noooo please leave we don't want to keep you waiting over nothing!" So I went, ran my check-out and grabbed my purse. My manager decided to have his lunch right next to these ladies (which was weird because he usually eats in the new room which is a separate area of the restaurant), so I followed him over to where he was sitting down to eat, and I was like "hey, Sean said he'd watch my table, but they are all taken care of, but they said they'd like to sit for a few more hours and talk, is it okay if I leave?" And he was like "We don't do that anymore." And I was like "wait, what?" He said "the people are here for an experience, and if you ust leave in the middle, you are ruining that experience." So I said "but they told me they want me to leave? they noticed that they are my last table and didn't want to be rude by keeping me here?" And he was like "It doesn't matter. You aren't allowed to leave when a table is still here." ... I got SO pissed off, honestly I just wanted to walk out because I was NOT about to sit there for 3 hours until the nice old ladies decided to leave, so I did what I thought was best... well. Kind of. I was SO pissed off I was just like "well that's stupid", and I went right over to that table and I was like "Hey ladies! I'm not leaving yet. My manager said it's now a policy that servers have to stay as long as the table is here no matter what, so if you ladies need anything else I'm still here for you." And the ladies exclaimed "WHAT. WHY. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, why the hell would they want that? Where is he so I can rip him a new one" And I was like "oh god please don't I'll just get in worse trouble than I'm already getting in." And they were like "we are so sorry you work for such an asshole. We are writing this place a review but we are gonna praise the hell out of you!" I decided to go this way because it was really the only thing that made sense? If I had stayed the ladies would have noticed and asked me why I hadn't left yet and I would have had to have told them anyways?? So they left, and I walked right back over to my manager and was like "here's my check out." And he was like "WHAT the HELL was that all about??" And I was like "well they told me they only wanted to stay if that meant I could leave. They would have noticed I was still here in another 10 minutes and asked why anyways." And he was like "why do you think that's okay!?" And I was like "because we always do it this way??? we've always been allowed to leave in this kind of circumstance. If the policy was changed, I was completely unaware??" And he was like "well it's your fault you didn't know the policy was changed" And I was like "i'm not a psychic? You never told me, you never wrote it on the board or emailed us about it??" And he was like "You know I never write emails why would I do that???" And I was like "because then maybe employees would know about new policies and avoid pissing you off? And either way, even if I had known about this policy, the ladies would have left anyways because I would have told them I wasn't allowed to leave until they did when they inevitably would have asked?? Unless you want us to start lying to our tables now??" And he was like "You just have a problem with the way I run my business. When do you work next, we need to talk about this then."
SO today I go in, and I notice I'm not on the floorchart so tbh before the convo started I knew I was canned. One of the assistant managers was there, I was like "lol I think I'm getting fired today" She was like "why" and I told her what happened above. Her response was "wtf? We've always been allowed to do that?" And I was like "RIGHT!?!" He called me into the new room like 2 minutes later. Since I knew I was getting fired for something bullshit, I went in a little more confident and gave him more of a piece of mind then I usually would have. It was a long convo of him just being a stubborn ass but here is the gist:
He pretty much tries to blame me for the messy situation and I point out if he had communicated this "new policy" this situation would have never arisen. I tell him I think I handled the situation in what at the time was proper procedure. I told him if I had KNOWN we weren't allowed to do this anymore, I wouldn't have came over to his table and asked him about it, and that it literally doesn't make any sense that he wants to yell at me about something that everyone in the restaurant thinks we are allowed to do. He tells me I'm lying. I tell him that I told Michelle (who is a Key manager) the story and her response was "but we are allowed to do that." That if one of his assistant managers thinks we are allowed to do it, he has completely failed to communicate his "new policy". He says "she's not an assistant manager." And i'm like "wtf?? her job is literally "key manager" which literally means she's an assistant manager" and he ignores my point and says I was being super passive aggressive yesterday. And I was like "I am a lot of things, but passive aggressive is not one of them." He tries to say I was passive aggressive again, and I'm like "absolutely not. I don't think you know what that word means. I was definitely AGGRESSIVE AGGRESSIVE. I told you to your face "this is stupid", slapped the check out down on your table, went and told those ladies you wouldn't let me leave, and then came back. I'm not saying my attitude was the correct attitude to have, but that's just being plain aggressive, not passive aggressive." I bring up the point that he's bad at communicating again, and he says that's not true at all. I ask him how he thinks I should have handled the situation. He then tells me (in long form) I should have done EXACTLY what I did, except I shouldn't have grabbed my purse. And I was like "so I'm seriously getting fired over grabbing my purse before asking to leave" and he was like "yes. you sent the message to the table that you were leaving. You weren't asking permission, you were telling me you were leaving." And I was like "uhhhhhhhhh noo? if you had wanted me to stay for them I would have agreed to it if you opened my section again? I grabbed my purse cause I didn't think I'd be walking by that table , you usually eat in the new room?" And he was like "well either way I have to let you go. You are one of our best servers but we just don't mesh well. I'll definitely give you a good reference, and if you want to come back in 6 months I'll hire you back if you've had a change in attitude". And I was like "yeah thanks but I doubt it. I don't want to work for someone who fails to acknowledge that he didn't communicate such an important policy, and doesn't have very good situational awareness." THEN I LEFT. Honestly, I feel relieved. I'm not really even mad, just irritated that he is that dumb????
