The first Ascension chapter of the year is here! In this chapter, we touch in with Nenkot, the Worker double agent in Galhemna. Oh, and some stuff about Allyria too. :P

Next chapter: repercussions.

I'm still aiming to have a second paid work up in the next couple weeks, along with another chapter of All the little lost...., so we'll see how that plan works out. Thanks again for your support and hope you enjoy!

Also, as a special treat, this is the original opening scene of the chapter. I changed it for what we have now, since I thought it had better narrative flow and it gave us a bit better look at Allyria and her life on Vara.

“You’re stupid even for a Brute, aren’t you?” The insult was punctuated by a swift kick to Allyria’s midsection. The young girl whimpered. She was lying on the ground, bruised and gasping. “I’m not one of those teat-suckers you fought before, am I? Did you think I was going to roll over like the rest?”

Ked was standing over her, a pair of the Tribune’s flunkies behind him, snickering as the other boy kicked the Verrish a second time. He was a year ahead of her and one of the bigger children. He loved contact sports. He also liked making comments about ‘Brutes’ and ‘keb’esh’. He’d been picking at her for the last two days until she’d finally snapped. She knew she shouldn’t have done it, but she’d been on her last nerve. He’d started in on her again, saying how Brutes were just animals. She’d tried to walk away, but she hadn’t gotten very far before she’d turned and launched herself at him.

He was bigger and older than her, but she hadn’t let that stop her. She should have.

Ked gave her a final contemptuous kick and turned away, his friends laughing as he made some comment. They started to walk away and got a few meters before one of them noticed. She turned, nudging Ked. The bigger boy looked over his shoulder, his lower eyes widening as the bruised and battered Allyria pushed herself up out of the dirt.

“Too stupid to stay down,” Ked growled, baring his teeth. “What does it take for you to learn?”

Allyria’s hands flexed and her claws unsheathed. A growl rose from her throat. “Let’s find out.”

Love it. The change of perspective felt a bit too redundant though. Reading both chapters back to back doesn’t really fit.
