This summer we're upgrading our recording kit and taking the opportunity to improve our video editing skills in time for launching an expanded set of tutored life drawing demonstrations in September. In response to your requests, we'll be sharing a new recording from Lance each week to show you how he deals with life and portrait poses of different lengths. This week Lance tackles short poses! Feel free to dip into these videos, skipping to any demonstrations that are helpful for you.

In this video:

  • Introduction (from the start)
  • 1 Min Poses (2min 35 secs)
  • 3 Min Poses (18 min 3 secs)

Tutored Life Drawing Course

If you find these demonstrations helpful, you might want to look at Lance's tutored life drawing course; all 34 tutorials can be found HERE on the Patreon for Life Drawing/Student tier supporters. These recordings will be available on here forever, so it's never too late to start working your way through them! We'll be adding to the course in September.

In-person life drawing classes

There is no better place to draw from the figure than an in-person life drawing class, however during this ongoing pandemic life classes all around the world have had to close and only some are able to safely re-open right now. If you're local to Brighton we'd love to see you at our life classes when we re-open in September. If you live further away we hope that you'll be able to make it along to life classes in your local area; it's a great way to support and connect with local tutors & models and to meet fellow drawers. In the long term we hope that the resources we provide here on the Draw Patreon can support in-person life drawing, rather than just being an alternative to it.

Online life drawing classes

As in-person classes re-open online sessions still are important for making life drawing accessible for members of our drawing community with disabilities and access issues that stop them getting to classes. They also help us to stay connected with our new international Draw community - one of the best things to come out of the last year for us. It's also very handy to be able to pop along to a life class in a lunch break, or to come drawing from the comfort of your own sofa! Online drawing has been our life line (pun intended) during this last year and we'll be continuing our weekly Wednesday sessions for as long as people remain keen to come along. All Patreon supporters can come to online life classes for free on the last Wednesday of the month, or book one-off sessions through the Draw website. Supporters on the Life Drawing/Student tiers can come along to unlimited sessions every week.

Reference photos

We have a huge data base of reference images for you to draw from, with different reference available to supporters on different tiers - you can find suggestions on how to source, manipulate and translate photo reference in our blogs, as well as watching interviews with different artists to find out how they use photo reference themselves. To stop yourself getting bogged down in a drawing, set a time limit for your drawings and if you're trying to cut down on your screen time, consider printing the drawings out.
