Summer is very much here in Brighton and after the obligatory April showers we are enjoying some sunshine on our faces here in our lovely little seaside town. Back in March, before May bought the promise of longer, warmer days we shot our summer photosets in The Brighton Studio, downstairs from our drawing studio. We have aimed to bring in some of the life models we've worked with online - all of our new models have now been inducted into our life model royalty scheme and receive an equal split of 25% of the total Patreon income each month, in addition to the pay the receive for modelling for the shoots and live online sessions. The moody chiaroscuro of the winter months has suited the season and the preference of many of you here, but we wanted to freshen things up and offer some summer-inspired reference images: abundant light and an ice-cream palette on a wooden floor that might just be a sandy beach if you squint. We hope you enjoy this preview of the 800 reference image we'll be releasing over the next four months and we can't wait to see what you make from it all!

About the models

  • Dmac is a London life model with a background in dance who is a regular feature at the Wednesday live sessions.

  • Rik is a poet from Brighton who has been a friend of the studio for many years and, more recently, a life model here in person.

  • Kiwie is another online regular who visited Brighton for the first time for the shoot, bringing a wealth of puns and hilarity.

  • Evita first life modelled in person at Draw Brighton many years ago, before moving up north to study - she is the most reliable online model imaginable and often stands in at short notice when a model is off sick. It was great to have her back in Brighton for a short spell.

  • Tendai is a veteran of the Draw sessions and a frequent contributor to our photo-sets and in-person life classes

About the photographer

  • The photos were shot by Olly Hearsey at his own palatial studio in New England House. You can tag him on Instagram here.

  • While new-comers to the Patreon might be more familiar with Justyna Neryng's photography, Olly was our original reference photographer and helped save our studio by shooting our first 15 life models at short notice in the days before lockdown in 2020. In 2018 he also shot the photos for my book Figure Drawing and we're really glad to have some new work from him to share here (We're back working with Justyna later in the summer too).
