Wrong. Anakin was right that he should stand trial. Mace was willing to execute the man for having a red lightsaber (and for killing his fellow Jedi) but still, that would have been CHAOS in the Republic and absolutely would have looked like the Jedi trying to seize more power. I understand where he's coming from, and we the audience know Palpatine and the Sith are evil, but most citizens at that time had no idea what a Sith was.
