Why do they fight over this planet? If you look at World War I, there were neverending fights over a very insignficant Fort. It was so old-fashined, it didn't give anyone an advantage in a modern war to hold this Fort. But they fought over it for many months with tens of thousands of soldiers dying. Just to get this Fort. And to keep the other side from having it. So even if this planet has no significance, they will fight over it anyway, just to get the other side out of it.
