The opening crawl of Empire says, "Although the Death Star has been destroyed, Imperial troops have driven the Rebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them across the galaxy." What exactly took place during this drive to destroy the rebel base, according to canon? Was this battle basically a tropical Hoth?

No, the Rebels just evacuated immediately after the Battle of Yavin. In Legends it was a little more dramatic.
