Harry Turtledove is an escaped Byzantine historian; he was hypnotized by L. Sprague de Camp at an impressionable age. He writes alternate history, other science fiction, fantasy (including the piece here), and, when they let him get away with it, historical fiction. He has a near-future novella, "The Breaking of Nations," forthcoming in August as part of And the Last Trump Shall Sound, whose other segments are by James Morrow and Cat Rambo. His new Hellenistic historical, Salamis, is due in October.
