Somehow the aliens who observed us for millenia just didn't develop germ theory. Or infrared. The machines and the sounds in this movie are amazing but man the plot is bad lol

That's the original plot by H.G. Wells, though. Give Spielberg some credit for sticking to the source material.

If they are going to watch Jack Reacher, they should watch the Reacher series on Amazon instead of those movies.

The last big alien invasion movie before this one was INDEPENDENCE DAY. It was a very fun, plucky, upbeat, optimistic, "America saves the day" kind of movie. But this movie came out after 9/11 (hence why the kids keep asking, "Is it the terrorists!?" over and over again), when America was much more uncertain about our future, so this movie was more of a "Oh shit, we're all gonna die" kind of movie. Interesting, because H G Wells wrote the book "War of the Worlds" at the height of the British Empire's power. He did it as a warning to a major world superpower not to get too sure of themselves, and that there are forces out there that could bring them low. This version sort of does the same thing for a post-9/11 America. We were very confident and sure of ourselves before then, but now, not so much. Both the novel back in 1896 and the movie in 2005 had sort of the same message to two different superpowers: don't get too cocky and sure of your own power. But who would have thought that America would have been brought down not by an invasion of aliens, but an invasion of wokeness.

43:12 I actually seen that set. If u go Universal Studios Hollywood, on 1 of rides/attractions u can take tour, and part of tour is the "War of the Worlds" set. It's the neighborhood with the crashed airplane. Pretty cool to see in person
