The reason Brendan didn't know he and Tommy's mother was sick is because they left. All three were supposed to leave but Brendan changed his mind and stayed to be with the girl who became his wife. Tommy and their mother moved from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Tacoma, Washington. That's about 3,000 miles away. They left and didn't ever contact Brendan, so he had no way of knowing their phone number or address.

I agree with both of you, but I think it's important to understand that it's totally justifiable that Brendan didn't know about his mom. First I'd all, Tommy and the mom left with no contact, so she might have gotten sick after they left. But it's also totally likely that you don't know your mom is sick. Like, I'd the mom's disease or cancer was just starting, there's no way to know. So honestly I think NEITHER of the boys are to blame for what they did. Like, they were both children. It doesn't matter who is older tbh

Yeah I think the main point for Tommy is that they were all planning to leave together away from the abusive father. In the end Brendan decided to stay with the father cause he didn’t want to leave his girlfriend. To me, being that they were both young, Brendan was 16 so Tommy was I’m guessing 15, 14, maybe 13 when it happened it was tough on both, but it seemed Tommy really needed/wanted his brother to be with them. So when he changed his mind Tommy felt betrayed or like he didn’t care about him, like he wasn’t important enough for his big brother. Then the rest of his life from what is shown is pretty bad, mother dies, friend in army dies, he deserts. Comes back and finds out his dad is doing all better, brother is happy with a family. And all he’s had is loss. Not saying he acting the best way he could or should. Just saying I can see where his angry is coming from. I felt bad for Brendan cause he seemed like a really good guy who wanted to reconnect with his brother but by then Tommy had to much built up to work through. I get emotional when he’s apologizing to Tommy right before he beats him cause you can tell he means it and to me it’s not just about the fight, it’s about not being there to protect and help his little brother through the hardships he went through even though they weren’t his fault. It’s beautifully done cause after he wins you see the big brother protecting his little brother, he is covering him in the ring, helps him up, holds him. And takes him out of the arena. Which to me is what Tommy really wanted all those years ago when they were young. Lastly the dads story arc was nice at the end shot when he saw the brothers finally embrace each other. Because at the end they do after the fight. Brendan holds Tommy and Tommy accepts the embrace. Some sense of peace for the father seeing the family, that broke largely cause of his past actions, finally start healing some of those wounds. Great reaction guys!!
