For Ellie: In the 9th Century, an Arab emissary named Ahmad ibn Fadlan was sent to establish communications and trade with "Northmen" (Vikings). He witnessed the funeral of a Viking chieftain and described it in his official report. This report was latter fictionalized and turned into the movie Larry mentioned, 'The 13th Warrior'. The writers of the show gave Earl Haraldson the same funeral Ahmad ibn Fadlan described in real life, including the slave girl and the Angel of Death.
