What i love about Japan is the way they respect honor, history and tradition, something i miss in my country today. Love the reaction if you wanna watch more historical movies you haven't reacted to try Braveheart, Kingdom of heaven or Last of the mohican, for action/drama try Usual suspects, Heat, Sicario or maybe Mad Max Also Schindler's List but that might be a bit emotional

It is hard to explain or even understand everything by being no from Japan and not knowing and living among this culture. At least you can feel what they were believing in. I think you understood yourself why they were fighting, but you couldn't accept it for how wasteful it was. And it was. But samurai swore to serve the emperor no matter what. It was they duty and although they were trying to tell him that maybe he is letting outsiders to get too much power and money by exploiting Japan, but hey couldn't actively resist him. So they rebelled by killing soldiers and destroying railroads of Japan magnates, who were trying to destroy traditions to get richer. Emperor was too young to see everything through and had doubts. He wanted Japan to become modern and independent and required sacrifices and some traditions and people were going to suffer, but maybe at the time there was no other way and all people around him were not good with advices. So i think for him it was a mixed feeling. He was grieving Kacumoto, but at the same time he knew it was probably inevitable. I know this movie gets some bad rep for Cruise being kind of a white savior coming and conquering their love. But i think it was ok. It wasn't like in a few minutes, it was a long process and there was no unnecessary love scenes or anything. Very calm, reserved, everything in the eyes and gestures. This was like a shorter version of Shogun TV series kind of, which i liked (based on a book).

Oh, and Americans fought Indians because of land. Many people were coming from Europe and they wanted land for their farms, cities, railroads. But Indians lived there and didn't want to give it away. It wasn't only in US. Many wars in the past were because of someone invading and taking lands from someone already living there.

Betterfire

They fought the Indian because Indian we're fighting for their lands that the US was getting from them by pushing west more and more.

Poor Ellie always gets sad movies, lol. You understood what you understood. You can only comprehend what you have experienced in life and you got most of it. I suppose it’s about evolution, old versus young, time runs out for everything. As for the Emporer not listening, most people don’t have the foresight to ignore their own desires. He was a young man who had not lived enough to have the wisdom to be able to see why the past and tradition are so valuable. Just like we ignore our elders at most times in our lives, we think they are trying to control us, or they’re senile or they just don’t understand being young. In actuality they’re are just trying to help us avoid their mistakes. As for the Native Americans, if you’d like a topical movie that is similar to this, I would suggest Dances With Wolves. I know it didn’t win the poll and I realize you only watch if someone pays for the movie to be watched, but if you are that interested in the Native American part it is a fantastic movie. It doesn’t tell the whole story, but I promise you, you won’t regret watching it, it’s like Shawshank Redemption. Always a pleasure to hear your thoughts on these movies, now go watch a comedy to cheer up.

First, let's not use the term "Indian." It was a mistake on the part of explorers who came to this continent in the 1400s who thought they were in India. The original inhabitants of this continent ARE NOT Indians. They have individual cultures and names of their peoples. They have occupied this land since time forgotten. Over 10,000 years. Collectively, the term Native Americans will suffice, as they and their ancesters were native to this land when Europeans arrived. So why did we fight them and massacre them? Because our ancestors were murderers with superior weapons who ignorantly assumed that they were better than the natives because they didn't live in built houses or wear European clothes and didn't speak the languages of the explorers and colonists. The infamous Christopher Columbus massacred hundreds of thousands of the natives he discovered when he arrived in 1492. He enslaved many, raped many. But not for their land. Because he looked at them like animals. The Native Americans were brutalized and later only fought to protect themselves from incessant invaders, murderers, and colonizers who set out to wipe them from the land in a deliberate act of genocide. That, and the enslavement of Africans for hundreds of years, are the two greatest shames of America.

Edward Olson

The Emperor was trying to wipe out what he thought was old-fashioned. He wanted Japan to be modern the Samurai were insisting on living in the traditional way.

Daniel White

Native American's and the early colonizers were at war over land. There were many brutalities on both sides (like scalping) so the settlers were extra brutal back (search the trail of tears).

This movie takes place during the Meiji restoration, when the central government under the emperor was trying to basically abolish the feudal system, and move Japan into the modern world. It's similar to what the Russian Tsar was doing around that time, abolishing serfdom in the Russian empire.
