Yes, Varys was behind Danys wedding. In the first season you see him talking to Ilirio Mopatis about Khal Drogo in the Dungeons, when Aria is hiding after chasing cats. In the first episode of this season Varys tells Tyrion that they are at a Mansion of Iliro Mopatis. I think it is not so much that he is loyal to the Targaryans, but that he wants the best ruler for the people. I am pretty sure that he was also on the council of Aeris Targaryan (the mad king). He always does what he has to stay relevant for his rulers, but in the background he works for the people.

Landing the Wildlings on the south side of the wall would be risky because the North would see it as an invasion. Going through Castle Black puts them under the protection of the Nights Watch.

You are right, afaik it makes no sense to land with the ships on the north side of the wall. As you said it seems like the show did it for dramatic effect. I think the danger that they are attacked again by the white walkers on their way to the gate would even outweigh the danger, that the nights watch would not open the gate.

Well you have to love Lena Headey's performance. She is definitely one of the overall strongest people in the show. I hated her but felt sympathy for her at times. I think because Lena is such a great actress.
