In relation to the "Your mercy killed the king line" - The Mercy was that Ned told Cersey that he learned her secret, so she would have a chance to save her children before he told the king. This gave time for Cersey to instruct the king's squire (who is a young Lannister) to give him ample wine and thus allow for the boar to kill him during the hunt. That's my understanding at least.

I have to agree with Ellie on the ending part with the knight. Honor is a big part of being a knight and to strip him of his post in such a public way was humiliating to him and made him lose "face" in front of everyone. So even if they were really going to give him a castle, which I really don't think they would have, he would be forever disgraced.
