The Okinawans were considered inferior by the Japanese and they used them as human shields and suicide bombers. They took all the food from them. They told them if they went to the Americans the Americans would kill and eat them. But some realized that the Americans would give them food and medicine and put them in tent camps behind the lines so they tried to run away but the Japanese killed them if they did. This also happened on Saipan. All the people on the islands controlled by Japan were treated ruthlessly by the Japanese. On Saipan they committed suicide and killed their own children by jumping off cliffs when the Americans were approaching because they were told the Americans would rape, kill and eat them.

Regarding that dying woman in the hut. She was holding a toy for the baby. I think she saw them take the baby and called out to them to take the baby’s toy. When Eugene saw her raise her hand, he pointed his rifle at her because he thought she might be booby trapped. She then lifted her clothes to show him she had no bomb and was wounded and dying. Then she took the muzzle and held it to her head to let him kill her. But then he regained his compassion and held her. He was filled with hate and anger after they killed Captain Haldane, but this scene was how his hatred died and redeemed himself. Later, when they hear about the new bomb that dropped on Japan, and they get in the truck, the camera shows bombers flying overhead. I believe those were the bombers that carried the second bomb, heading towards Nagasaki.
