I put my new nose to work as I scan the room for Cloud. The smell of animal musk is unusually common amongst the crowd of laborers, though there’s varying degrees. Some of the men here smell like they live in the same pens as the animals they keep while others just smell like the outdoors. Cloud is more of the latter, which makes it a little difficult to find her amongst the more odorous bodies.

I leave the dance floor, going through the door leading to the bathrooms. Thankfully, they are at the end of a long hall, so their smell isn’t overpowering. The hall is dark, relying on light spilling through the perpetually open doorway. I understand, doesn’t take much light to walk a straight line. It also makes a convenient place for amorous couples to sneak away for a little nip and tickle. Something Cloud is taking apt advantage of.

I stare at Cloud and her “puppy”. She has the young man pressed against the wall, one leg pushed between his as she holds him up by his shoulders. She is actually holding him off the ground, his feet dangling and his hands balled in her shirt as she does her best to swallow his tongue. He hasn’t completely broken down and wrapped his legs around her waist so he’s holding onto the tatters of his masculinity but I don’t think they’ll last long if I leave things be.

I’m embarrassed for him as he’s clearly too far gone to be bothered. I don’t waste any embarrassment for Cloud. This girl was clearly born without shame.

I decide to clear my throat when her hand grabs his crotch, deciding she needs to be rescued from herself.

Cloud pulls away and turns toward me. So does her boy-toy but he quickly turns away. “Honored sister. Did you need something?”

“Ah. We were going to get some refreshments. Eh, Harry?”

“Harvey,” the boy-toy squeaks, briefly looking up before diverting his gaze to the ceiling.

“Right, Harvey. Your friend Aidan got into a bit of a scuffle if you’d like to check on him.”

“Ah, yeah, I should…”

He squirms in Cloud’s grip. She lets out a huff but sets him on his feet. She leans forward to whisper in his ear “I’ll find you again, little treat.” Then she does something to him that makes his breath catch, loud enough I wouldn’t need my impressive hearing to hear it. Her arms come down and he bolts past me like an animal whose cage has been thrown open.

The door swings shut behind him, depositing us in a heavy gloom. “That wasn’t very nice,” Cloud says. Her voice moves closer and a hand brushes my arm. “Were you feeling left out? I would have preferred you join rather than chase my puppy away.”

“Please. The two of us together might’ve given him a heart attack.” I turn toward where I think she is and flex a new muscle to bring down my night vision “film”. My vision gains a yellow overtone as details jump into focus. “And that’s only one of the many, many things wrong with that scenario.”

Cloud sucks in a breath, her eyes wide with wonder. A hand comes up, her fingers twitching a breath away from my eyes. “What is this? Can you…”

“See you? Perfectly. Part of my new, ah, blessing.”

“Incredible.” A single finger traces my eyelid. “Do you know that your eyes are glowing? Like two yellow stars stolen from the heavens. How brave you are, taking the moon’s children from her. Or perhaps it is a gift.”

I clear my throat, feeling a hint of embarrassment. “Everyone’s eyes glow when they channel mana, it’s nothing special.”

“It is different. Your entire eye is aglow rather than the ring of color.”

The whole eye? “Sounds disturbing.”

“It is beautiful.” She leans forward and I hastily move back. “Honored sister, you wound me.”

“You were just swapping spit with Henry or whatever. Ah ah, get that mouth away from me.”

“Then it is fine if it is not my mouth?” Her hands don’t wait for an answer before going to my waist, quickly moving to my ass. She pushes her head against my neck, her lips pausing before brushing skin, her breath ticklish. I groan as her hands flex.

“We are not doing this here,” I grumble. “I came to bring you back to the others.”

“You are not pushing me away,” she whispers. “Besides, you ruined my fun. Is it not right that you provide me with substitute entertainment?”

Quick as a snake, I push her against the wall, trapping her with one arm while my other grabs her chin, tilting her head up. “Hey, now. I’m no one’s substitute.”

Cloud whines, tilting her head back. My eyes narrow. Hah, if only I could get the imagine of her and Howard slapping tongues out of my mind.

Rather than go for those slightly parted lips, I duck my head, grazing my teeth along the sensitive skin at front of her neck. Her whole body shudders. Yup, had a feeling she’d like that. She reminds me of my wife in quite a few ways.

“Lou…”

“Nope.” I step back, grabbing her hand and dragging her behind me as I head for main part of the dance hall. “I told you, we’re not doing anything here. And not before you wash your mouth out.”

“You should not be so wary. My little treat has nothing we do not. He tasted rather sweet.”

“Disgusting. I don’t want to know what is lingering on his tongue that you can taste.” I push open the door, blinking away the night vision film. “Come on. The others said they wanted drinks. Afterwards, I want out of here.” I’m about all danced out and I’ve had enough of this place’s ‘charms’.

“I suppose I could do with a glass of water. Would that satisfy you, honored sister?”

“You’re really angling for that kiss.”

“I am,” she says in a tone that can only be described as a purr.

“In that case, you’re going to have to gurgle with something stronger than water.”
