► The Abbey of the Crimson Grove.
Description of the location.
At the foot of the Gorgon Mountain, a magnificent abbey was built a long time ago.
It was destined to spread the light and the faith of Azerai in these bleak and inhospitable lands.
But today, a century later, a traveler who wanders into this place will be met by thick acrid fog, tasting of metal. Branches of unnatural, eerie trees will rise towards him from the mist. He will see that the bark of the trees is flesh, and beneath it, veins of violet ichor pulse synchronous and hypnotic.
The roots of these dreadful trees are covered with dozens of human bodies, all starved to death. Now they are but food for the Licta flowers, or corpse flowers, as some call them.
In the middle of this singular forest, a waterfall shatters the silence. It is not water that showers down, but thick and odorous purple slime. Tangled and pleached flesh-branches form a passage through the stream.
After crossing a bridge, a traveler may notice sinister hunchbacked creatures patrolling the grounds. Once humans, they are now nothing more than mindless fanatical servitors of the Abbey. Carefully treading even further, one may see the silhouettes of half-ruined spires drifting out of the mist, but instead of beautiful choir singing hideous sounds waft from their tops: a cacophony, weaved out of screams, cries and human barking, intermingled with somehow sickly peal of the bells.
Moving closer to the monastery gates, another scene unfurls. A mob of mutated acolytes, covered with bubonic outgrowths, scourge themselves as a creature that calls itself their deacon is preaching to them. The Deacon sits enthroned on a pile of its own tumors. The Acolytes are prone to attack savagely, tearing limb from limb anyone foolish enough to enter this place, but the Deacon has his own peculiar tactics.
Speaking mellifluously, he entices travelers to come inside the main temple, so he may introduce them to the Hierophant ruling this place.
Inside the temple, entangled with immense pulsating veins, there is a monstrously huge and foul-smelling creature cradling a giant vessel in its arms. With a tranquil albeit hoarse voice it paints a vivid picture of bliss and abundance given by the blessed Grove, insisting that the traveler has to receive communion by tasting its gifts.
If, driven by fear, the traveler accepts the “gift”, weeks later he will find himself in the mob of zealous flagellants, similarly disfigured by bubonic growths.
If he valiantly rejects the communion, insulting the Hierophant, the Elder Brothers will immediately seize the insolent blasphemer and lock him away in the temple’s catacombs. He will be force-fed the fruit of the flesh-trees until he turns into a mindless wretch to serve as a guardian of the Abbey’s boundaries.

► Crimson Grove’s Coenobites.
Philosophy and tactics.
A century ago, when the zeal of Azerai’s faith reached its peak, an abbey was founded beneath the slope of Gorgon Mountain with an intent to spread the light and word of Azerai to these remote and inhospitable lands.
The Abbey’s reliquary preserved a strand of hair for the head of the goddess herself, and later added the hallows of the first knights of Azerai.
These relics attracted numerous pilgrims, who soon enriched the monastery. Grey walls of the Abbey were now decorated with statues and spires of silver and gold.
But later, decades after the foundation of the Abbey, the monks began hearing a heartbeat in its cellars, and strange vegetation started to grow around its protective walls. The plants seemed to be formed of flesh and blood, and violet ichor throbbed in their veins, pulsing in a singular rhythm.
Near the eastern gate the plants grew into a thick grove. The Abbey’s dwellers considered it a sign of Azerai’s grace, although the flesh fruits from the Grove were forbidden to them.
But poor harvests and famine led the Coenobites to ignore the ban, starting with a woman who later became the Hierophant. She was the first one to taste the fruit and nourished the starving coenobites with it.
As time went on, this fare started to change the monks’ bodies with uncontrollable mutations. Their faith warped accordingly, for the Coenobites have abandoned the worship of the Goddess of Light, and offer their prayers to the sacred grove that feeds them.
Those who tasted the forbidden fruit live a long life, albeit filled with physical pain, accepted by the monks as a trial imposed by their new deity. When the monks die, their bodies produce a unique kind of Licta flower — a purple one. It is said that one can use a specific formula to mix this flower with powdered flesh, and make a consumable substance, which allows to see the memories of the creature that used to own said flesh.
In battle, the Coenobite acolytes act fanatically, on impulse, attacking without tactics or consideration. Only their seniors behave more reasonably, preferably attacking and isolating the weakest or the most dangerous foes.
