Hi all! It's been a while since I did one of these, so here's a Director's Commentary on my very first video essay, "Capitalist Present, Collective Future: An Analysis of Labor in Night in the Woods and Tacoma" (jeez, that's a mouthful). I hope y'all enjoy it, it was a fun walk down memory lane for me.

Also, I will admit that I'm putting this out as a little bonus because I'm feeling kinda guilty about my current experience with Pathologic 2. Y'all helped me reach that milestone a while ago, and I've played the first couple days of the game and it is just really tough going for me. There was a while there where I basically wasn't playing anything, because whenever I played a different game, I'd feel guilty for not playing Pathologic, but I didn't want to play Pathologic, so I'd just...not do anything. And that wasn't productive for anyone!

So I will get back to it at some point, but I'm setting it aside for the moment. It turns out playing games is pretty important to producing these videos! If that was the one reason you joined the Patreon, I am sincerely sorry and will not be offended if ya decide to spend your money elsewhere. Anyway, hope ya enjoy this vid with vintage Bad Audio, and stick around, I've got some fun stuff coming up.

Director's Commentary: Capitalist Present, Collective Future

Hiya! Here's a fun look back at my very first video, with thoughts on how it's aged and how my style has evolved.

Very excited to watch this at lunch!

I’m always sad when one of the creators I support on Patreon feels guilty or bad for being a human being with a life and struggles and joys that might keep them from delivering on some promised ~content~. I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m here to support your thinking and continued existence (maybe thriving?!), not to get a deliverable every month/week/whatever.

Thanks for sharing this update and for sharing such fantastic ideas!

As someone who also makes video essays and is used to applying that hypercritical lens especially to my own work I can honestly say that while you've obviously improved, your earlier videos do not in any way come off as unpolished to the average viewer so don't be too hard on yourself! Plus this video was one of the ones that got me to sub, especially as someone who hardly actually plays video games because NitW is like maybe the only one you've spoken about that I have actually played. I also definitely related to all the struggles you spoke about here and was nodding right the way through. Non-video makers do not realise how much of a nightmare voiceover is. I don't know if I've ever actually commented on one of your videos so I'll just say here I so, so appreciate the ambition of your content. Again, it's evolved, but it was there from the very beginning. Your videos show what video essays have the potential to be. Would love to see more of these on older videos too (especially Modern Art)!

This was so fun and interesting to watch! Thanks for this one. I’d love to see a director’s commentary on the haunted house vid, but I feel like that may be one of the “big, important” ones you were talking about.

Take your time Jacob! We know you’ll put out something great when whenever you’re able to get around to it!
