My three favorite characters fucking :)

Love Nina's expression on the first WIP. Woah, a day+ render length. In comparison, what were the lengths of the Cyberpunk/blade runner bathroom? If they were shorter than the worked out render, what is taking up a lot of resources? Close up shots/hair etc?

So, render lengths are a weird beast. There's a couple of different factors that.. well factor into render times. It's lighting, composition, resolution, etc, etc. It's a lot. And there's not a whole lot of concise documentation on it. There's broad ideas about render times in DAZ and Iray, but it's a bit wishy washy. Over the last couple of years I've noticed Iray being a lot quicker, at least 50% quicker in bright, outdoor settings. So, the darker the environment/lighting, the longer it takes to render and "denoise" the dark areas. The closer you are to specific things like characters or clothes, the longer it takes to render. I think it has to do with optimization. Things in the distance, don't need as many rays as something close up. For example, it's counter-intuitive but a medium shot of 1 character takes longer than a close-up would. Because it needs more light rays to be shot, I THINK. So, this particular render that took over a day is the Welcome Summer set with Linde and Yuna. Most of the renders of that set, took 3-4 hours. Which is pretty quick, it's outdoors and it's very bright. But this shot that took over a day, was from a pretty low angle with on of the characters' shirts on the floor in the foreground. And it was really close to the camera. I think it's because of that, that it has to do extra light calculations for that shirt to look accurate, that it took that long to render. A different shot, of the same pose & lights, just a different angle, took the usual 3-4 hours.

Wow your PC must turn into a space heater during these renders. My 3090 blows so much hot air during long renders that I need to open the window and turn my fan on. Loud too.

slop_art

Mine isn't loud, my cpu fan is louder than my 3090, I think. Maybe I'm somehow accidentally throttling my GPU. It is warm here though, definitely gonna be interesting during these warmer days.

Oh wow. Thank you for the detailed answer. That's crazy how something as simple as camera angle changes the length of the render drastically. Like, I sorta understand why. A new angle means different things are getting rendered etc but it's wild that it can be up to 20+ hour swing from the different angle you mentioned. Granted it's scene dependent and what's there. I'd get more nervous by the hour watching the render go by. Would you get these types of longer renders once per set or just random in nature that it's not much of an issue when it happens and is just more of a nuisance when it does? I know you have a preference for more cinematic style sets, more atmospheric in its lighting and shots etc, would that increase the average render times or is it more that it doesn't really impact it and everything to do with the camera angle chosen in that particular instance? Would you consider a second machine should you start seeing an increase in render times consistently or not needed?

slop_art

Right, it is wild. If I pulled the camera back a bit, from that fabric on the ground. It would've spared 20+ hours. And it's a slight change. Ehm, I think it's random and more of a nuisance, yeah. I can't constantly check on renders every hour to see if it's taking extra long and at the point where I WOULD notice it, it's probably been 3-4 hours already so I usually take the L at that point. Usually it takes a bit longer, darker lighting and all that. Another rig? That's around a 4-7K investment that I'm not gonna make myself. :) I'm also not seeing a consistent increase in render times. It's just sometimes it takes a bit longer because I put the camera maybe RIGHT at the border of like a wall or something.

Rikyla

Ah fair fair. Appreciate the answer and the info. Haha yeah. Not worth the investment considering the cost. I think with your rig with a 3090, that will last you plenty anyway. It's a beast of a card. If you decide to buy a new card in 3-4 years, you'll have a 3090 to spare unless the second hand market is good for it that it's just sensible to sell the 3090 if or when you decide to upgrade in the future.
