Spooney Bard

In a bit of a deep cut we get a parody of the Amazing MJ in Come to Naught. During the forth issue, I believe, the tempestuous actor playing Spidey ditched the production and MJ volunteered to shoot in his place. Did it make any sense for a non-stuntperson to do this masked fight scene compared to the leading lady especially when it would cost millions in cg the production didn't have? Hell no, so this parody doesn't bother to either when the outfit MJ wears is a dirty one of Peter's that happens to set off a pheromone explosion from Silk. It's a weird ass pairing but I must say I see no way will this issue not make my yearly top 5. As bizarre as it sounds it was a very witty spoof, with MJ being the star, Cindy the starlet, and Mysterio the director. I already chuckled at Quint's inability to engage in cognitive dissonance, but MJ's callout immediately afterward was sublime. The book parses into three sections, with one and three being intentionally short which I found a masterstroke. It lets the panic of the first seep out early and by building the second part (heavier on sexual expression and connection) it allows the third performative sex part to culminate perfectly. It's freaking difficult to describe what works so well here. The only part that leaves you wanting is that again the Savage Six never appear (seriously their appearance in the next issue is nothing but setup gold) despite being several porntastic villain designs. It's also a bit distant as a story, the connection between MJ and Mysterio never truly gelled in the classic book and Cindy has to be the randomest addition. Not for nothing, but this on doubles down on the eros like no book in quite a while so if this is Blackhood's fetish pairing then I'd say it was a success.

I’ll admit, the addition of Silk in this story may seem random, but it was a great opportunity to include her in more stories. Stories featuring Felicia and Spider-Gwen can seem a bit repetitive now and again, and as I’ve said before, you have a full toy-box of other supporting characters to play with in the Spider-Man mythos. This comic may not be for everyone, but it’s a nice change of pace from the general storyline tropes
