Long before we had CDs or MP3s, the only way to keep a record of a piece of music was to write it down, and even today, musical notation still gives us a level of precision and control that's hard to match. But how does it work? How do a bunch of dots and lines turn into beautiful songs? Well, it's actually pretty simple! Music is a language, and like most languages, it has a writing system. Musical notation lets us store and communicate ideas across centuries, but if you don't know how to read it, it just looks like a bunch of dots and lines.
