What makes a lyric great? Is it its emotional honesty? Its clever turns of phrase? Its inspirational message? Maybe. Quite possibly all those things, but beneath all that one thing's almost certain: It rhymes. So if we want to be better lyricists, the first thing we have to do is understand what rhymes are, what they mean, and what they're capable of. Mastering rhymes means mastering the innate music of language, and that sounds pretty cool, so let's talk rhymes for a second, ok?

Lyrics are one of the most important parts of a song. They can be powerful, funny, or deeply emotional, but no matter what they almost always rhyme. From simple couplets to complex interwoven piles of internal rhyme, there are lots of ways to add a little poetry to your words to really make them pop.
