There's lots of strange and beautiful scales out there, each with their own unique sounds, origins, and constructions, but for my money, there's none stranger or more beautiful than the Bohlen-Pierce Scale. It starts with an incredibly simple question: What if the octave just... didn't exist? What would we do then? Could we make music without it? Well, that's what Heinz Bohlen and John Robinson Pierce set out to discover. Not together, mind you: They only spoke once and it was about microwaves. But both of them stumbled on this problem, and they both arrived at roughly the same solution. (As did Kees Van Prooijen but he's not in the name for some reason.) So how does it work? Ummmm... it's complicated.
