Alright, look. We have to talk about Cats. It's one of the weirdest shows in the history of musical theater, but also somehow one of the most successful. There's been a lot of talk about it in light of the new movie, and as far as I've seen, that talk has centered almost exclusively on the ways in which it's weird, but I think there's a better question to be asked here: Why? And how? And also, to reiterate... Why? It's not like something just got lost in translation: Cats was an absurd pile of nonsense from the very beginning, before Andrew Lloyd Webber first put notes on paper, and every step of the way it just kept on getting weirder. And yet somehow, at the end of it all, they wound up with something as fantastic and exhilarating as it is incoherent. How did that happen, and, one last time for good luck... Why?
