Major and minor are great, but they're far from the only scales out there. They don't work for every situation, and in this month's Building Blocks we're looking at some of their most popular replacements, the Modes. Modes are more than just a set of scales, though: They're all deeply connected to the major scale, and they give us some important insights into how that scale (and scales in general) actually work. Plus they just sound really cool!

Great primer on modes! I assume that chord functions are ambiguous and up to taste like in the minor scale? It seems hard to write progressions that sound like they lead in a "right" direction.

Yeah, for the most part the minor stuff applies just as well here. You can still wring functions out of them (although Dominant can be really hard to find in a lot of cases.) but there's not clear-cut rules like there are in major, and there's also diminished triads popping up in weird places, making things even harder. Modal writing tends not to focus as much on function as it does characteristic sounds (For instance, when I think Dorian the first thing I think of is a Imi-IV vamp.) that aren't quite as directional but showcase the notes that make the mode special.
