I've seen a lot of reactors expecting Rudeus to recognize Sylphie and i'm here like seriously? let's see, would you recognize a childhood friend you knew for 2 years if you saw them 8 years later, talks like a guy (soft voice but still), different hair color, dresses like a guy, has rare eye color but you can't see it cause of sunglasses, you 2 lived in the boonies and now goes by a different name (Fitz) and works as the princess' body guard. Even if they have Incantantion-less magic which is rare i still think it's not a stretch to see how he struggles to figure it out.

Nobody said it yet so here it is. Elinalise has a curse, it is real. And by this time in the story Rudeus is completely aware of it in the novels. They explain it in further detail later on, but this curse is and will be part of the narrative, hence its importance. What it does is basically like fantasy succubus, she has to take in the semen of men or else her life force is drained instead and she'd die.
