At 14:00 in episode 310, Ukitake explains that the head captain has lost an arm. Hadō #96. Ittō Kasō (一刀火葬, Single Blade Cremation; Viz "Flame Sword Burial") is a Kidō spell. Ittō Kasō is a forbidden offensive technique. The practitioner can only activate the spell by using their own body as the catalyst. Due to this effect, Sōsuke Aizen referred to it as the spell of sacrifice. The spell causes a brief shockwave followed by a massive pillar of red fire erupting from the ground in the shape of a katana's tip. The blast from the pillar is so forceful that it can completely obliterate all buildings within its vicinity. By using this spell, Captain-Commander Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto lost his left arm.

Original Name: Shigekuni Yamamoto 山本重國 Honorific title/Nickname: Genryuusai 元柳斋 1.Eijisai - Ei ji sai 丿字斋 He had a single large scar on his forehead, which earned him the nickname "Eijisai" due to its shape. Ei - 丿(written as 丿 in Japanese.) meaning: Radical 4 or radical slash (丿部) meaning "slash" or "bend" is one of 6 of the 214 Kangxi radicals that are composed of only one stroke. ji - 字 meaning: word sai - 斋 meaning: 1.斋 House, mostly used as the name of a study, school dormitory, etc. 2.斋 is a suffix traditionally used in nicknames/honorific titles for respected people So Ei-ji-sai means "the school/style of the word Ei(丿)". 2.Jyujisai - Jyu ji sai 十字斋 After Chōjirō Sasakibe attacked Yamamoto with Bankai, he had two crossed scars on his head, which earned him the nickname "Jyujisai" due to its shape. Jyu - 十 (written as 十 in Japanese.) meaning: ten (btw: one: 一; two: 二; three: 三; four: 四; five: 五; six: 六; seven: 七; eight: 八; nine: 九; ten:十 ) 3.Genryuusai 元柳斋 Yamamoto was the "Genryū" Founder. (its not a spoiler, the genre and the school he founded are introduced in the mid-card of episode 5) Genryū - 元流 meaning: the most original style 元: 1.Nouns The head of a person. 2.adjective The head of the pack; the first in line. 流: • (ryū) ←りう (riu) the flow of water or something like water art forms, methods, styles and techniques peculiar to a person or house 柳• (ryū) ←りう (riu) willow, especially weeping willow thin as a willow leaf After he got his trademark cross-shaped scar they started calling him "十字斎" accordingly, but since he didn't like it that nickname in the first place and he didn't want the disciple that caused the scar to feel guilty, he adopted the name 元柳斎 (Genryu because it has the same pronunciation as the school he founded, with 柳 (willow) instead of 流 (flow, style)). Remember when he stared at the willow tree in the yard in this episode?

DefinitivelyZach

I figured that the tree had something to do with it. obviously i don't know japanese so I usually miss stuff like that. But yeah makes sense!
