I did have the same ranting and frustration as you. I don't get why the story took this path.

Souta's problem right now is that he thinks Mahiro is in love with Liu so he is trying to step back. It is a culture thing, but dating - or even marrying - someone does not mean you like them in Japan. I don't think Souta thinks he likes the girl. But he believes he can't have Mahiro. That's all. Honestly, I like the way they inserted the girl. So often in BL, you get a lead going off and getting into a different relationship as some weird kind of rebellion or revenge, but tthis is not that. He only did not reject her outright because she begged. And then hhe agreed to date only because he thought Mahiro was not an option. You don't like Shepherd's Pie??? I love it! Grew up on it, in Barbados. To be fair, we do not make it with lamb though. Which reminds me, there is a mistranslation. ラム can be both lamb and rum, since the l/r distinction does not exist, and there are less vowel sounds in Japanese. And there is the angsty misunderstanding Asia loves so much. Souta says "it is good to have someone close by watching over you." He means Mahiro and Liu, because he thinks Mahiro likes Liu. But Mahiro thinks he means the girl, because she is his workmate and always closeby. Loved Sota talking about his dream. Stability is so important in Japan that in some ways being a government worker is the best job you can have. So there are tons of people like that who give up their relatively reasonable dream in favour of government jobs. Funny that you mention the pressure of getting married in Japan. Some years back, my upstairs neighbour randomly got married one weekend. We asked why he just got married out of the blue and he said that his girlfriend said she needed to be married by 28. I can not imagine getting married on a few days' notice just because my partner's birthday was coming up. Aside - For Liu's age difference, I am guesstimating a little over 10 years. Figaro Tseng, the actor, is a month older than me. We are both 41. His character is giving late 30s into 40s. The way Souta has graduated uni and is established in his job, I would say he and Mahiro are late 20s.

Thank you for your detailed explanations. They always help to better understand the background of the actions. 😊 We in the west often tend to compare behavior, especially from Asian countries, with western culture or expect characters to act exactly as we know and would do. Therefore, we often cannot understand the action or find it illogical. 😅 When we date someone here, it usually means that we like them. This is not necessarily the same for Asian culture. So thank you very much for your explanations, they help to better understand the plot and the characters.❤️
