Until this rewatch, I never realized how much subtext there truly was behind the scene where White forcibly removes Steven’s gem. White sees Steven’s gem as the perfect, conforming, acceptable part of him and his human self as the weak, flawed, ugly part. She can’t perceive that Steven’s gem and body form an inseparable whole and that she can’t destroy what she finds offensive and keep what she idealizes. From a neurodivergent perspective, White is definitely evocative of the ableist martyr parent who believes their child’s neurotype (autistic, ADHD or otherwise) isn’t the “real” them and that they need a “cure” to unlock the child they wish they had. White is also evocative of the self-hating neurodivergent parent who sees everything they hate about themself in their neurodivergent child (as well as evocative of self-hating neurodivergents in general). In fact, White’s obsession with perfection and horror when her face goes flush (with Steven’s color) reminds me of my own experience prior to embracing my Autistic identity, endlessly trying to perfect the mask and suppress my Autistic traits. Of course, the LGBTQIA2S+ allegory comes through strongly, as well (Blue finally deciding to call Steven by his preferred name in this episode, highlighting a pretty obvious nonbinary/trans allegory, although she does still use the wrong pronouns). Of course, the series wraps up a little too idealistically, as there are those IRL who will never be convinced to accept that there is no default human experience and that no immutable trait (including, but not limited to, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, sex, ethnicity or race) makes someone inferior. Kat, I’m glad you were able to break out of the shell you were forced into as a child and unapologetically embrace every part of yourself. I’m also glad you felt comfortable sharing part of the exploration of your ADHD neurotype over the past couple years. Never let anyone tell you that your neurotype detracts from who you really are or is merely a weight you carry around. It’s just one of many facets (no pun intended) of yourself. You wouldn’t be Kat without that and every other facet of your brain, mind and body. Looking forward to the remaining Steven Universe content. The GG/SU van hasn’t been retired just yet.

My partner just lost a separate partner to an infection. When I come we are watching this. She’s never seen it and I think healing is needed and I know it delivers. Especially that finally message
